Self-similar and fractal nature of internet traffic

چکیده
The self-similar bursty Internet traffic is usually characterized by the Hurst parameter (H). Such a process is also seen to possess fractal characteristics in time described by a parameter (b), with multifractals in most cases. We observe that these highly stochastic traffics have fractals in flow density too, described by a fractal dimension (D), also with the possibiliy of multifractals as in the former. This requires another parameter for the description of Internet traffic, besides the usual selfsimilarity parameter b or H and the different simulations or models worked out to understand the Internet traffic to reproduce the characteristics as found in the present work. We also find a notable selfsimilarity feature of the autocorrelations in the data and its aggregates, in all the cases studied. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Internet Traffic Modelling -Variance Based Markovian Fitting of Fractal Point Process from Self-Similarity Perspective
Abstract. Most of the proposed self-similar traffic models could not address fractal onset time at which self-similar behavior actually begins. This parameter has considerable impact on network performance. Fractal point process (FPP) emulates self-similar traffic and involves fractal onset time (FOT). However, this process is asymptotic in nature and has less effective in queueing based perfor...
متن کاملMathematics in Internet Traffic Data Analysis
The Internet traffic data have been found to possess extreme variability and bursty structures in a wide range of time-scales, so that there is no definite duration of busy or silent periods. But there is a self-similarity for which it is possible to characterize the data. The self-similar nature was first proposed by Leland et a1 [l] and subsequently established by others in a flood of researc...
متن کاملQueue Analysis for Wireless Packet Data Traffic
Recent research based on Internet traffic measurements shows that the traffic flows have a fractal nature (i.e., self-similarity property), which causes the underestimation of the network engineering parameters when using the Poisson model. Preliminary field measurements demonstrate that packet data traffic in wireless communications also exhibits self-similarity. In this research, we investiga...
متن کاملNetwork Behavior Analysis Based on a Computer Network Model
This paper applies a new traffic model, iterated function systems (IFS) for network traffic modelling, to explore computer network behaviour and analyse network performance. IFS model can generate various self-similar data flows according to a certain character. In the light of the experiments, we have discovered interesting phenomena. It is found that increasing the routers’ processing capacit...
متن کاملThe Chaotic Nature of TCP Congestion Control
In this paper we demonstrate how TCP congestion control can show chaotic behavior. We demonstrate the major features of chaotic systems in TCP/IP networks with examples. These features include unpredictability, extreme sensitivity to initial conditions and odd periodicity. Previous work has shown the fractal nature of aggregate TCP/IP traffic and one explanation to this phenomenon was that traf...
